AI visibility for B2B technology companies

By the Citationly team · Updated

The short answer

When a buyer asks ChatGPT for the best payment gateway, data annotation vendor or HR software, the answer is a vendor shortlist with reasons and sources. AI visibility for a B2B company means knowing which buying questions put you on that shortlist, which pages the answers trust, and how they describe what you do.

Questions a buyer might ask ChatGPT

  • “What are the best payment gateways for a small business in India?”
  • “Which data annotation companies can label video at scale?”
  • “Which HR and payroll software suits a 200-person company?”
  • “What should I compare when choosing a CRM?”
  • “Which vendors offer multilingual speech data for Indian languages?”
  • “What are alternatives to the big cloud providers for a startup?”
  • “How do I evaluate an outsourced software development partner?”

Examples to show the kind of question. A report uses questions prepared for your own category.

Why B2B buyers ask AI

Business purchases start with a shortlist, and building one used to mean searching, reading analyst lists and asking peers. Now many buyers start by asking ChatGPT: “which data annotation vendors handle video?” or “what are the best payment gateways for a small business?” The answer is a ready-made shortlist, with a reason for each name and links to sources.

For a B2B company, that shortlist is the top of the funnel. If you are on it, you are in the evaluation before a sales call happens. If you are not, a buyer may contact three vendors and never reach your website. And because B2B categories are specific, a single description in an answer, right or wrong, shapes how a buyer thinks of you.

What a Citationly report shows for a B2B company

We read your website to understand what you offer, who you sell to and where, then draft questions a buyer in your category might ask, from understanding the category to comparing vendors for a specific need. Each question is asked three times with web search on, and every answer is recorded word for word.

The report shows:

  • Who the answers name. Every vendor named, counted by how many answers named it, with your own line: named in [n] of [N] answers we recorded. Each count opens to the answers behind it.
  • The websites the answers cite. Vendor pages, review and directory sites, analyst-style lists, articles, whatever the answers actually relied on for your questions, with the number of answers citing each.
  • What the answers say about you. Whether you appear as a top pick, how your offering is described, and any cautionary sentence, each with a suggested response.
  • Checked against your own website. Where an answer describes your services, locations or capabilities differently from your own pages.
  • Next steps from where the answers looked instead. The pages cited in the answers that left you out, strongest evidence first, and the services where your site doesn’t use the words buyers used.

The method page records the model, the date and whether web search ran for each answer. Answers come from OpenAI’s model behind ChatGPT, through its API; the ChatGPT app can answer differently.

What B2B teams can do with it

Name the use cases buyers ask about. If buyers ask for “video annotation at scale” or “payroll for 200 employees”, a page that says exactly that, with specifics, is easier for an answer to match and cite than a broad platform page.

Describe what you do in one consistent sentence. Answers often repeat a one-line description of each vendor. If your site, your directory listings and your social profiles describe you differently, answers may pick the wrong one.

Check the directories, review sites and articles the answers cite. If answers in your category lean on particular directories or comparison articles, see whether you are listed there and whether the details are current. If they don’t appear among the sources, don’t assume they matter.

Publish comparison and evaluation content honestly. Buyers ask how to evaluate vendors. A useful, fair page on what to compare can be cited, and it shows how you think.

We can’t promise a change in what ChatGPT says. A second run on the same locked questions shows what moved, as a difference between two runs.
